Finland — Jukai Sesshin With Karen Terzano

This time our Jukai sesshin* will be quite special!

As usual, on Friday evening there will be a Jukai ceremony, in which a group of students will receive the Bodhisattva precepts and formally become Buddhists.

But also - for the very first time in the history of Ordinary Mind Zendo here in Finland - there will be a Denkai ceremony. Those who receive Denkai are authorized to teach in our lineage.

On this sesshin three person will receive this authorization from our teacher Karen Terzano: one from Finland, one from Sweden, and one from USA.

After the ceremonies, both the Jukai participants as well as the new teachers, will all be giving a short talk during the evening and the next day.

Given this special nature of the sesshin, we are expecting a very full house, so signing in early is advised! Registration can be found here.

If you have any questions, contact the jikido Jani Henttonen: jani_kristian@hotmail.com

Finland — Spring Sesshin With Karen Terzano

Finland — Spring Sesshin With Karen Terzano

Sesshin is an intensive Zen retreat. The formal program of our Spring sesshin begins around 4.20 am and ends at 9.30pm. The sesshin program is done mainly in silence. All participants should avoid needless communication between each other. Sesshin is an opportunity to settle into silence and meet oneself without distraction.

A formal sitting block usually consists of three 30-minute zazen periods which are separated by 10-minute walking meditation (kinhin) periods. Each 3x30 minutes sitting period is followed by breakfast/lunch/dinner/work practice/rest periods depending on the time of the day. There is also one yoga/body practice period during the day. All periods outside of formal zazen are also considered as practice, be it eating, sleeping, working or resting. Sifts of periods are announced by bells and other instruments.

Different sutras and other Buddhist texts are chanted twice a day, and a dharma talk is given by the teacher once a day.

Private student-teacher interview (dokusan) is available once a day for each participant, usually during formal zazen periods. Dokusan is an opportunity to ask questions concerning ones Zen practice.

During work periods all participants are appointed to a task, usually in cleaning or kitchen work. Housework is led by the work master and kitchen by the head cook (tenzo).

Zendo instructor (jikido) guides and oversees the mediation hall (zendo) during sitting periods and attends to general matters concerning running the daily schedule.

The sesshin ends with public dokusan, where one is encouraged to publicly share their experience and practice with the teacher and other participants. After public dokusan there is an informal communal lunch.

Finland - Summer Qigong Sesshin With Karen Terzano & Robert Rosenbaum

SUMMER QIGONG SESSHIN WITH KAREN TERZANO & ROBERT ROSENBAUM AT LAMMI RETREAT CENTRE

This summer, Ordinary Mind Zendo Finland is again offering a seven day retreat (sesshin) with our teacher Karen Terzano and a visiting teacher Robert Rosenbaum, who is joining us for the second time.

Continuous Practice, Body and Mind - Sitting meditation (zazen) and moving meditation (qigong) fit like a box and its lid. When we rest in the stillness at the heart of movement and draw on the energy at the center of tranquility, practice blossoms.

During this sesshin we will complement zazen with some of the movements, warm-up exercises, and acupressure self-massage of Dayan (Wild Goose) Qigong. This ancient Taoist form was developed by a Buddhist monk to sustain health and deepen meditation so it permeates Zen flesh and Zen bones. We will also study Dogen’s essay “Everyday Activity”to help us find realization in everything we do.

Teachers:
Karen Terzano is an American Zen Buddhist teacher in the Ordinary Mind School tradition, founded by Charlotte Joko Beck (1917-2011). Karen has worked as a research psychologist and university professor while maintaining an active psychotherapy practice. In 2012 Karen established Ordinary Mind Zendo in Finland and serves as our guiding teacher.

This sesshin's visiting teacher Robert Meikyo Rosenbaum, Ph.D., worked thirty years as a neuropsychologist, psychotherapist, and behavioral medicine specialist before retiring to devote all his time to the practice of Zen and Qigong. He has received lay entrustment in Zen from Sojun Mel Weitsman of Berkeley Zen Center and been authorized as a senior teacher of Dayan (“Wild Goose”) Qigong in the lineage of Yang Meijun by Master Hui Liu of the Wen Wu School.

Participation:
Sesshin starts on Saturday evening at 18.00, and ends on the next Saturday afternoon.

Part-time participation is also possible. In that case we recommend arriving on Tuesday the 24th, when another introduction to qigong acupressure points and basic form will be held (at 19.00).

However, one can also join on other days if Saturday or Tuesday are not possible.

Also, for those who are interested, Robert will offer a qigong refresher on Saturday afternoon at 14.00, and again on Saturday afternoon after the sesshin has ended. So if you have been practicing qigong since last year, or can only come part-time now, this will be a good opportunity to do the whole form again.

Sesshin registration is now closed, as it's fully booked.

Body and Mind Study of the Way of Compassion - Integrating Zen and Dayan Qigong

Sitting meditation (zazen) and moving meditation (qigong) fit like a box and its lid. During this sesshin we will complement zazen by learning the 64 movements, warm-up exercises, and acupressure self-massage of Dayan (Wild Goose) Qigong. We will also study Dogen’s essay “Body and Mind Study of the Way.”
